Organic Chaga Mushroom Coffee

This is one of our newest creations here at Freshly Fermented. We are using the best quality fair trade coffee beans, and our own organic Chaga mushroom powder. Our organic Chaga powder is made from mushrooms we culture, grow, and harvest on site offering you the freshest Chaga powder on the market. The majority of Chaga powder/capsules on offer are manufactured from dehydrated mushrooms. While dehydrating mushrooms to preserve them is an age-old tactic, around 20-30% of the medicinal benefits are lost when compared to fresh mushrooms during the dehydrating process.

So what is Organic Chaga mushroom and why would I need it?

Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) is a type of fungus that grows mainly on the bark of birch trees in cold climates, such as Northern Europe, Siberia, Russia, Korea, Northern Canada and Alaska. Chaga is also known by other names, such as black mass, clinker polypore, birch canker polypore, cinder conk and the sterile conk trunk rot (of birch).

For centuries, Chaga has been used as a traditional medicine in Russia and other Northern European countries, mainly to boost immunity and overall health. It has also been used to treat diabetes, certain cancers and heart disease. Western medicine is now finding that in fact Chaga may well be the king of the immune-boosting mushrooms.

Inflammation is a natural response of your immune system that can protect against disease. However, long-term inflammation is linked to conditions like heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Animal and test-tube studies suggest that Chaga extract can positively impact immunity by reducing long-term inflammation and fighting harmful bacteria and viruses. By promoting the formation of beneficial cytokines — specialised proteins that regulate the immune system — Chaga stimulates white blood cells, which are essential for fighting off harmful bacteria or viruses.

As a result, this mushroom could help fight infections — from minor colds to serious illnesses.

Additionally, other animal and test-tube studies demonstrate that chaga can prevent the production of harmful cytokines, which trigger inflammation and are associated with disease.

On top of Chaga’s immune boosting properties, it’s also high in polysaccharides and beta-glucans making it a fantastic gut-healthy prebiotic. With so many health benefits, it is no wonder that this fungus is now being touted as a super mushroom. Why wouldn’t you want to include Organic Chaga powder as part of your healthy lifestyle?

Why mushroom coffee?

There are lots of reasons why adaptogens such as medicinal mushrooms and coffee work amazingly well when paired together. The first is with adaptogenic coffee you get all the benefits of drinking normal coffee but also minimising any side effects (think jitters, racing heart and anxiety). Caffeine is a nootropic all on its own, it increases our alertness and attention by blocking our adenosine receptors (which make us sleepy). However, on the flip side, caffeine can also increase our cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and cause more jitters, racing heart and anxiety.

Adaptogens such as medicinal mushrooms may help balance the body’s cortisol levels, which allows us to enjoy our lovely coffee and get the benefits of caffeine without the nasty jitters etc! Mushroom coffee has been shown to be beneficial to people who are caffeine sensitive, which allows them to reap the benefits of caffeine without the above mentioned side effects.

Secondly, caffeine is absorbed very quickly into the blood system and we start feeling the benefits within about 15 mins of consumption. However, as we all may have experienced at some point in our lives, it can also lead to a “crash” (lack of energy, fatigue, drowsiness etc). Adaptogens such as medicinal mushrooms support a sustained level of energy, but without the “crash”.

IMPORTANT: We recommend you research the potential health benefits of Chaga online and any possible contraindications. It is a good idea, as with any new supplement, to consult with your own medical practitioner if you are unsure about taking it, particularly if you are taking other medication or have an existing medical condition.
